Removing Smart Quotes for WebCTUsing screenshots from Word 2004 for Mac OS X. (Switch to Windows) Contents:The ProblemBy default, Microsoft Word replaces regular quotation marks (") with "Smart Quotes", which are quotation marks that bend toward the words they enclose. If you save a Word Document as a web page, and then upload it to WebCT, you may notice that these smart quotes show up as strange symbols instead. Advanced Explanation >>The reason for this is that WebCT uses what is called a "frameset" to place its menus above your document on the page. The frameset chooses a single "character encoding" to use for all of the pages in it. A character encoding tells your web browser how to translate the bytes of data in your file into the characters (letters, numbers, and punctuation) that you see on the screen. The frameset overrides the character encoding your document is saved as, so some of the bytes in your file will be associated with the wrong characters. Fortunately, all western character encodings have the same values for numbers, letters, and standard punctuation. Non-standard characters like smart quotes, however, are often associated with different character codes, and will come out garbled. Unfortunately, we cannot change the character encoding WebCT uses. *Note: the menus in your version of word may look slightly different from the screenshots in this tutorial. If your version of word names these options differently, please send a comment using the form at the bottom of the page. 1) Disabling "Smart-Quote" InsertionThe simplest solution to this is to remove the smart quotes from your document. However, you should first turn off the option that places smart quotes in your document, to keep from getting any more of them. You may re-enable this feature when you are not working on web pages.
In this new window, choose the AutoFormat as You Type tab and, under Replace as you type, uncheck the option "Straight quotes" with "smart quotes".
2) Removing "Smart Quotes" from a DocumentDisabling the autocorrect option will stop word from inserting more smart quotes, but it does not change existing smart quotes in the document. A simple way to remove them is by using a trick with Find and Replace.
Type a regular quotation mark (") into both the "Find what" and "Replace with" fields, and click Replace All. This will replace all smart quotes with regular straight quotes. Do the same for single quotes (') if you used them.
