How to connect to the Windows Virtual Lab
Read the FAQ regarding the ability to print from the Windows Virtual Lab.
- Install the Windows Remote Desktop Client for your computer. You need to do this only once. If you are using an Instructional Computing computer, a remote desktop client is already installed and you may proceed to Step 2.
Clients:
Windows client - Installation instructions
Mac OS X client - Installation instructions (opens a new popup window)
UNIX/Linux client
- Launch the Windows Remote Desktop Client
- Windows XP: Start Menu : Programs : Accessories : Communications
- Windows Vista: Start Menu : All Programs : Accessories
- Mac: Applications / Microsoft Office 2004 / Additional Tools / Remote Desktop Connection
- UNIX:
- Login to a UNIX workstation.
- Select the radio button for "CDE (Common Desktop Environment)" and click OK.
- Right-click on the Desktop, and select Tools > Terminal. This opens a terminal session.
- Issue the following command:
rdesktop -f -N -D -a 24 -z windows.ic.ucsc.edu
- Connect to
windows.ic.ucsc.edu

- In order to access your local drives, the Windows Remote Desktop Client must connect them to the Windows Virtual Lab. When you choose this option, you will receive a warning. (See screenshots for Windows or Macintosh clients.) Please consult Section IV of the UC Electronic Communication Policy for your specific rights while using the Virtual Computer Labs Service.
- Accept the Instructional Computing Use Policy.
- Authenticate with your UCSC ID and password.
