Unix Timeshare SystemAccessing the Unix TimesharesYou will need an SSH or SFTP client to access unix.ic.ucsc.edu. Please see the How To Connect page for more information. The Mail EnvironmentThe IC Solaris systems use several facilities to fetch email off the campus mail server and make it available to the user. pine is the recommended mail reader on the Unix systems. The Unix mail commands (Mail, mail, mailx, are available for reading and composing email. Unlike pine, these commands do not automatically get new mail messages from the mail server. In order to read new mail messages users will need to first fetch those messages from the campus mail server. To do this, users can execute incmail. This command fetches new email messages from the campus mail server and makes these messages available to the other Unix mail commands. DotfilesIC Solaris supports generic .cshrc and .login files. Please be careful when modifying these files. It's a good practice to copy these files before attempting to edit them. And for those users who have old dotfiles which were needed during the Athena days, IC Solaris provides some support for them. PrintersPrinting directly from unix.ic.ucsc.edu to the IC lab printers is not available. If you need to print to a lab printer you will need to use one of the workstation in our labs. A note to previous buddy/rufus/sasha/meow users: most of the printers which were enabled on buddy/rufus/sasha/meow are enabled on the IC Solaris systems. These printers are supported by forwarding printer requests to the central campus print spooler. Information on PostgreSQLRead information about IC's PostgreSQL installation.
